CES 2017: Dolby Keeps Riding High; DEG Entertainment Data Shows Promise

LAS VEGAS — Dell had plenty to show off at the Consumer Electronics Show, debuting a 27-inch QHD smart workspace computer, touting its ability to be used at an angle or flat on a desk, with the hope of catering the product to content creators.

The Dell Canvas aims to be as simple as using “pen and paper,” the company said, with the use of touch-screens, digital pens and totems, turning “drawings into part of the digital workflow and enhance[ing] collaboration.

The computer was developed in partnership with Microsoft, and works with most Windows 10 devices. Software partners include Adobe, Autodesk, AVID, Dassault Systems, SolidWorks and Microsoft.

Dell also introduced a new XPS 13 2-in-1, a 13-inch device that feature a 360-degree hinge for multiple viewing options, 15 hours of battery life, and a 5.7 megapixel screen. Dell also updated its XPS 15 laptop, added a 7th gen Intel Core processor a fingerprint reader.

Dell also debuted a VR-ready mobile workstation, the Dell Precision 7720, designed specifically for VR content creation. “It’s Dell’s most powerful mobile workstation, thanks to the latest 7th gen Intel Core and Intel Xeon processors and NVIDIA Pascal Quadro professional graphics,” the company said in a statement. “And since it’s a mobile workstation, creators can now develop VR content from anywhere they find inspiration.”

Additionally, Dell announced a new 8K monitor, several monitors with high dynamic range support, and new wireless charging technology.

Meanwhile, Dolby continued making headlines at CES, with its list of partnerships for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos growing each day: Lenovo, LG, Philips, Pioneer, Sony and TCL all announced partnerships with the company, with Dolby also making news in the broadcast, OTT, Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc and gaming areas.

“Dolby is transforming visual and audio experiences for consumers everywhere with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos,” said Kevin Yeaman, president and CEO of Dolby. “The industry’s endorsement of Dolby Vision is growing with Sony joining LG, TCL, Vizio, and other major manufacturers in delivering the Dolby Vision experience to consumers. For the first time, consumers will be able to get the Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos experience through one product with LG’s 2017 OLED TVs.”

Meanwhile, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group announced its 2016 year-end home entertainment data, with spending on content up nearly 2% to $18 billion.

Electronic sell-through grew 5% year over year, with theatrical content spending in the EST space up 17%. VOD spending grew 6% to $2.1 billion, while subscription VOD spending rose 26% in the fourth quarter alone.

HDTV household penetration hit 112 million homes, with 16 million 4K sets among the count. There are now 88 million Blu-ray Disc players in American homes as well.
