EY Releases Consumer Study on Digital Home Services (MESA)

EY released a new study, “10 Ways the COVID-19 Crisis is Changing the Digital Home Experience,” that surveyed over 3,500 US households on their attitudes and behaviors toward digital home services, such as 5G, streaming, live TV, wireless internet and more, during this pandemic.

Shockingly, even in this uncertain environment in which people are more money-conscious, the majority of people are not cutting back on sports content spend.

In fact, only 10% of customers are considering downgrading or dropping their live TV sports bundle in spite of the lack of live sports to watch.

Other key takeaways from the study include:

–Overall, operators are applauded for their COVID-19 response, streaming services received high favorability with 62% among consumers, but that sentiment fell for social media companies, and further for print media (47%).
–Almost half (47%) of households claim increased use of content streaming services, and a large slice of demand is being satisfied by free services (60% say they have signed up for free trials).
–A large group of consumers (36%) seem ambivalent about 5G, with only 24% saying they are considering a 5G connection as a result of the crisis.
–With live sports programming absent, there is a rush for home internet providers to fill the content void with virtual alternatives including e-sports and e-gaming services.
