CES 2021: Technicolor Marks 20 Million DOCSIS 3.1 Gateway Units Shipped

Technicolor used the opening day of CES 2021 to share it’s shipped more than 20 million DOCSIS 3.1 gateways to date, with 8.1 million of those coming in 2020.

The milestone puts Technicolor Connected Home as the market leader in providing DOCSIS 3.1 customer premises equipment (CPE) to cable operators worldwide, with the company’s first deployment in 2017. Technicolor Connected Home continues to leverage open technologies for network service providers (NSPs) with the goal of helping them deliver connectivity and premium entertainment experiences to consumers.

“The pace of adoption for DOCSIS 3.1 CPE has been remarkable as operators seek to provide consumers with the latest technologies to support in-home connectivity for subscribers. While industry analysts were projecting a strong deployment year for DOCSIS 3.1 devices, Technicolor Connected Home has exceeded expectations,” said Marcin Godlewski, director of product management for Technicolor.

Technicolor expects adoption of DOCSIS 3.1 to continue through 2021, with the company already working with multiple Tier 1 operators in North America, Europe and Latin America. Part of the growing adoption of DOCSIS 3.1 comes as operators transition to next-generation Wi0Fi technologies, with the integration of Wi-Fi 6 into Technicolor Connected Home DOCSIS 3.1 CPE being cited by NSP customers as one of the reasons for demand.

“During 2020, consumers were exceptionally reliant on NSPs to support the way they worked and studied from home,” Godlewski said. “Beyond this, we are also seeing rising interest in entertainment services — including streaming and online gaming services — that require reliable broadband services. Consumers expect high performance on devices that are using different services throughout the home. This is a tailor-made opportunity for DOCSIS 3.1 CPE that is equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology. We expect this trend to continue in 2021 and beyond.”
