Global M+E Day: Signiant Brings Cloud Knowledge

At the June 8 Global Media & Entertainment Day, held at the Royal Garden Hotel in London and via the MESAverse virtual platform, Rick Capstraw, chief growth officer for Signiant, ran attendees through some Signiant history, both in terms of operating its own SaaS platform at scale and in helping top media companies during their cloud journeys.

And during its work through the years, Signiant’s come away with a lot of insights.

“It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that content migration in and out of the cloud is growing tremendously,” Capstraw said during the presentation “The Five Pitfalls of Cloud & SaaS Economics in Media.” “Through the pandemic we’ve seen that cloud input and output from our customer ecosystem grows endlessly.”

Capstraw pointed to a recent survey that showed more than 60 percent of companies considered cost to be the most important aspect of their cloud business. The cloud can be an awesome resource for companies delivering more content to more places on tight deadlines and with limited resources, but it often isn’t cheap, Capstraw said.

“How do you effectively run and operate a business, utilise the best of breed resources, while still controlling cloud costs?” Capstraw said.

He offered a list of suggestions based on Signiant’s experience in the business, first of which was “slow down.” “Between what you’re doing on-prem, what you’ve done historically, what you want and need to move into the cloud,” take it one step at a time, he said.

Buying process overkill, underestimating what it’s really going to cost to build your own services, and over-bundling your cloud services are among the pitfalls Signiant believes companies most-often encounter.
