Whip Media: ‘Dragon,’ ‘Rings’ Both Debut Strong

Both “The Rings of Power” and “House of the Dragon” are among the top five series debuts since 2018, based on viewership data from Whip Media, with “House of the Dragon” scoring the biggest series debut of all shows in recent years, based on its viewership in the three days following its release Aug. 21.

“The Rings of Power,” meanwhile, cracked the top five based on its three-day performance following its premiere Sept. 1. “The Witcher,” “Loki” and “The Falcon and The Winter Solider” were Nos. 2-4.

Comparing the two shows and how they performed in their first three days post-debut, “Dragon” had 51 percent more viewers than “Rings,” though “The Rings of Power” beat “Dragon” in terms of audience retention: 87 percent of viewers who watched the first episode of “Rings” also watched the second episode, according to Whip Media data, putting it on par with “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.”

For “Dragon,” 74 percent of people who watched the first episode also watched the second episode.

Both the first and second “Rings” episodes were made available on Sept. 1, while HBO only released one “Dragon” episode on Aug. 21, with the second episode released the next week.
