BB Media Offers Deep Dive Into VOD Trends at a Global Scale

At the recent When East Meets West 23 in Trieste, Italy — an event focused on exploring all co-production and distribution opportunities in both the Eastern and Western regions — Vicky Campolongo, European business development manager at BB Media, gave a presentation (“Who is the Messi of Contents – A Comparison Between Continents”), disclosing detailed information on the streaming market supply and demand in Europe and Latin America.

With BB Media’s global monitoring for 2022, the presentation shed light on the content offer in 53 countries in both regions: 1,487 streaming platforms in Europe and 1,290 in LATAM, and an availability of 677,000 and 280,000 titles, respectively.

Interestingly, the United Kingdom and Brazil are the countries where more content is available in each continent, with the UK also standing out as the only country where users prefer series over movies.

When talking about the most remembered streaming series of the first half of 2022, both European and Latin-American users mentioned ‘Stranger Things’ the most. The genre most shared between these same contents showed Action, Drama and Crime as top three.

The penetration levels of account sharing were also strikingly similar, with 29 percent in Europe and 30 percent in Latin America.

When looking into these comparisons, the reality is that there is not a grand difference between regions. Users tend to have similar preferences, and streaming platforms provide a resembling supply.

For example, most titles in Europe are under an SVOD model (48 percent), followed by AVOD/free VOD and TVOD (both 21 percent), while in LATAM’s case, SVOD also rules as the most offered business model (54 percent) and AVOD/free VOD and TVOD once again share the second place (both 23 percent).

The same can be said about the offered genres, as shown below, with the top six ranking baring quite a resemblance.

Other noteworthy topics that were discussed in the event were the situation of global scripted productions, digital campaigning for films, the importance of the East and the West in the industry, the video on-demand ecosystem, to name a few.
