Databricks Announces Winners For the Inaugural ASEAN Data Team Awards

Databricks, the lakehouse company, has recognized five remarkable data teams, three data executives and seven data advocates in the first-ever ASEAN edition of its Data Team Awards where hundreds of teams were nominated across industries, countries, and companies.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate organizations and visionaries in ASEAN who are driving the next era of innovation with data, analytics and AI,” said Ed Lenta, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Databricks Asia Pacific & Japan. “Their impactful and transformative work is a reflection of the rapid adoption and incredible customer demand we’re seeing for the Databricks Lakehouse Platform and underscores the confidence in our vision – that lakehouse is the data and AI platform of choice.”

Congratulations to the 2022 ASEAN Data Team Award winners:

Data Team Transformation Award: GovTech Singapore

Honors the data teams who are taking their business to the next level with data-driven transformation, accelerating operations that lead to clear, impactful results.

The Government Technology Agency of Singapore, or GovTech Singapore, leads digital transformation within Singapore’s public sector and provides the infrastructure to support the delivery of a wide range of digital services to the public. With the aim to further enable secure sharing of core sensor data among various government agencies, including the Public Utilities Board, Land Transport Authority, and Energy Market Authority, GovTech operationalized a unified data architecture to facilitate authorized access to multiple agency data sources (acting as single sources of truth). The team leveraged Databricks to build fully version-controlled data pipelines feeding into a collaboration-enabled data workspace with the requisite safeguards.

Such an approach facilitated the transfer of standardized clean data among agencies, ensuring robust data governance while reducing the time to fulfill a data request from months to just seven working days. In addition, the Databricks platform provided the necessary data fusion and exploitation workspace and democratized access to computing resources, allowing government officers to conduct large scale analysis of data across various data sources and agencies. These outcomes have ultimately transformed the manner and speed by which government officers are able to access and process data – using data to drive policy decisions, improve agency operations, and enhance service delivery and outcomes for residents.

Data Team Disruptor Award: True Digital Group

Celebrates the data teams who are using data and AI to disrupt an industry and challenge the status quo, deploying cutting-edge use cases that others will adopt.

True Digital Group is the digital arm of True Corporation, a major communications conglomerate that runs mobile services, high-speed Internet and paid television in Thailand. Its analytics arm protects and analyzes the data of 30 million customers, partnering with leading enterprises to transform this proprietary data into powerful insights that lead to exceptional business impacts through precise decisions while preserving people’s privacy.

Powered by AI on Databricks Lakehouse, True Digital Group ingests over 20 billion browsing events, 2.5 billion location events, and around 300 million transactional records on a daily basis, transforming large amounts of data into clean, standardized, and modeled data components. These data are then leveraged to build customized solutions for advertising, credit risk, and business insights. For example, its tailored credit risk solutions use micro-segmentation and telecom payment information to model clients’ creditworthiness for financial products.

Data Team Democratization Award: Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS)

Recognizes data teams who are driving the CoEs that are delivering data into the hands of empowered users across the organization — making every team a data team.

PETRONAS is a Fortune 500 global energy and solutions company based in Malaysia and operating in more than 50 countries worldwide, employing nearly 48,000 employees.

It is the largest enterprise in Malaysia to fully move their data platform to the cloud and is the first to tap into the Databricks Lakehouse Platform for their data and AI needs. Breaking down all data silos via their Enterprise Data Hub (EDH), they have benefited more than 10,000 active users within a year. EDH also enables use cases in all aspects of PETRONAS’ business from upstream, downstream, unstructured data to knowledge management.

Data Team Visionary Award: Siam Commercial Bank

Recognizes the leaders who embody innovation and impact in data and AI — producing amazing results within their organization and inspiring the global data community.

One of Thailand’s largest banks, Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) wanted to unlock the value of its vast data volumes to enhance experiences and simplify digital finance for consumers, and also empower its employees with intelligent machine learning-based decision making.

Adopting the Databricks Lakehouse Platform to democratize and shift its data approach to being cloud-first, SCB developed improved credit scoring and income estimation models that leveraged ML to not only boost loan approval rates but also significantly streamlined the loan application process. The flexibility of the platform also allowed the ML-based models to be recalibrated quickly in response to market changes, enabling SCB’s team to better monitor loan performance and make precise, data-driven decisions on everyday operations.

A new model was also rolled out via the Lakehouse to help SCB customers with the management of their accounts, including customized tracking of transactions and personalized recommendations to improve financial health or to actively grow a portfolio, through large volumes of data on individual spending patterns, risk appetites and other customer behavior. The enhanced features have led to an increase in SCB’s customer engagement on digital channels by over 40% in the past year.
