NAB 2019: ‘Godmother of VR’ to Talk ‘Deep Fakes’ at Cyber Summit

To close the program during the second-annual Cybersecurity & Content Protection Summit, being held at the Westgate Hotel during the NAB Show on April 7, Nonny de la Peña, founder and CEO of Emblematic Group, will take attendees on a tour of the world of “deep fakes.”

Technology today has reached a point where it’s possible to create completely fake videos, inserting people into settings and scenes they never really appeared in. De la Peña’s company, founded in 2007, features a team of journalists, filmmakers, and developers that create and stage room-scale virtual reality environments.

Her presentation — “Is that Real? The Threat & Opportunity of Deep Fakes” — will look at how film and TV companies are facing a new era where deep fake images can bootleg a celebrity, news cast or a video, creating unauthorized, artificial reality that is nearly indiscernible to the untrained eye. She’ll share ideas on how content owners can protect their talent, properties, and brands from being counterfeited.

“What does truth have to do with it?” said de la Peña, who’s known as the “Godmother of VR.” “From Facebook trolling to point cloud special effects, I will offer a tour of the scary and thrilling in the digital using historical frameworks and a plea to advertisers to help America trust again.”

Co-produced by the NAB Show and the Content Delivery & Security Association (CDSA), the Content Protection & Cybersecurity Summit is presented by SafeStream by SHIFT, Akamai, IBM Security, Microsoft Azure, Convergent Risks, the Digital Watermarking Alliance, the Trusted Partner Network, and produced by the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance (MESA) and the Content Delivery & Security Association (CDSA), in cooperation with the NAB Show.
