The Global State of Information Security and Copyright Protection

PwC’s annual Global State of Information Security Survey 2018 reveals that entertainment and media executives are enhancing security to align with changes in technology; and in turn, are improving privacy measures, business processes and strategies. Additionally, copyright infringement and piracy activity continues to increase exponentially as technology innovations allow for easier consumption of digital content. This is leaving content owners in the entertainment and media industry with increasing challenges in preventing and detecting unauthorized distribution of their digital assets. Armed with new data on threats, assets and adversaries, this session provides key findings that support a case for creating an evolved, business-focused security and content protection program.

KEYNOTE CONVERSATION – Larson Studios: Responding to Third-Party Vendor Threats

When Rick and Jill Larson, owners of the popular LA post house Larson Studios, received two short, personal text messages saying” hello” right before Christmas 2016, they had no idea that they were about to be the victim of Hollywood’s biggest hack since Sony Pictures in 2014. They soon discovered that a group calling itself the Dark Overlord, was already inside their server and was threatening to leak precious pre-release content from their customers. Larson’s principals will offer lessons learned about what to do to avoid this from happening to you (and what to do if/when it happens).

Creative Vs. Security: Getting on the Same Side of the Struggle

We’re all on the same side when it comes to content security. The same monitoring you have across your cloud-enabled enterprise also applies to how users engage and interact with available technology platforms and existing workflows. Leaks have a financial impact throughout the production, from the corporate headquarters to the set. However, those who create and produce our industry’s content and those who are responsible for protecting its value are often talking “different languages” when it comes to security. This panel discussion gathers security and technology execs to talk about “getting on the same page” when it comes to content protection.

The Hidden Enemy: Building Awareness for Unseen Vulnerabilities

“Security” issues, as discussed in M&E, speak mainly to risk, firewalls and known vulnerabilities within an organization. The outlier enemies are often an uneven, endless and evolving landscape of threats that move beyond the traditional enterprise or “device”. A rich set of tools is available to mitigate security risks for today’s systems but there are attack vectors hidden from view that can defeat even the best defenses. This session highlights some obscure ways you may already unknowingly be compromised.

Ask A Reviewer: What Do They Really Think About Your Screening Site?

If you follow any TV critics on social media, you’ll immediately learn that press screeners are the bane of their existence. Whether you’re a studio, network or an indie distributor who sends out pre-release content, chances are your name is being taken in vain somewhere this very minute! Are your technology and security decisions impacting the ink your content receives? How do they prefer to watch pre-release content given the various delivery methods? This session answers these questions, our critics will relate their own experiences with screeners and address the impact that online screeners (or lack thereof) have on the quality and amount of their press coverage.

If You Like It, Then You Shoulda Put a Watermark on It: Watermarking as a Service is Cheaper and Easier Than You Think
There are multiple points in any media supply chain where content needs to be exposed to third parties, but current solutions to add protection tend to be expensive, time-consuming and cumbersome. We’ll share examples of media and entertainment clients that have hardened their security without disrupting existing workflows through simple implementations of the SafeStream watermarking API. We’ll look at some successful implementations, including a market research firm who recently added watermarking into their process for screening pre-release movies to consumers, and hear from integrator Nick Stokes of X Platform, who implemented SafeStream into a proprietary media trafficking system. We’ll talk dollars, time, and headaches saved by adopting a “WaaS” approach.

Winning the Piracy Wars: Strategies for Protecting your OTT Content

There is a large shift happening in the pay-TV space fueled in part by the proliferation of new OTT services. And this trend is not showing signs of slowing down any time soon, evident by the large number of content owners and pay-TV operators launching their own direct-to-consumer online video services to compete with popular streaming providers. But as OTT continues to gain in popularity, it is also a prime target for pirates who have been early adopters of streaming and are now also benefiting from a more mature and consumer-friendly technology. In this session, we examine this changing landscape and what service and content providers can do to protect their OTT services against piracy. In combination with monitoring and take-down services, tools such as watermarking have been optimized for streaming, resulting in an environment where anti-piracy measures can be particularly effective.
