Keynotes Announced for Dec. 6 Content Protection Summit

When industry leaders from major studios, networks and the content protection community gather Dec. 6 at the Marina del Rey Marriott in Los Angeles for the eighth annual CDSA Content Protection Summit (CPS), they’ll be treated to a full-day conference program dedicated to helping the media and entertainment industry better thwart attacks and develop best practices when it comes to protecting their assets.

Among those presenting at CPS are Victoria Espinel, president and CSO of, BSA: The Software Alliance, who’ll deliver the keynote presentation “Charting a Collaborative Course for Software and Cybersecurity,” where she’ll share how new cybersecurity and data laws, and cybersecurity happenings around the world, are impacting intellectual property and Hollywood in general.

Espinel leads the BSA’s worldwide strategic efforts, and also serves as president of Software.org: the BSA Foundation, an international research organization that aims to help policymakers and the public better understand the impact of software. She served for a decade in the White House, both as President Obama’s advisor on intellectual property and, prior to that, as the first-ever chief trade negotiator for intellectual property and innovation at the Office of the United States Trade Representative. Espinel was also a professor of international trade and intellectual property at George Mason’s School of Law, and is a founding member of Girls Who Code’s Washington, D.C., summer immersion program.

Also delivering a keynote address at CPS is Jonathan Taplin, director emeritus of the Annenberg innovation Lab at the University of Southern California. His presentation — “Fighting Giants and Reimagining Our Industry’s Future” — will tackle new design solutions for the web that both protects the integrity and profitability of content.

A professor at the USC Annenberg School from 2003-2016, Taplin’s an expert in international communication management and digital media entertainment, having produced more than two dozen hours of TV documentaries and a dozen feature films. He’s a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Additionally at CPS, Richard Larson, president and CEO of Larson Studios, will bring his company’s top minds together for the session “Responding to Third-Party Vendor Threats,” which will offer insights into one of the more publicized network intrusions that occurred in 2017 via a third-party vendor, and how content companies can prevent the same thing happening to them. Larson will be joined by his chief engineer David Dondorf, Jill Marshall Larson, the company’s SVP of finance and administration, and Chris Unthank, director of digital systems for Larson Studios.

The Content Protection Summit is produced by MESA and CDSA, presented by MediaSilo, and sponsored by Independent Security Evaluators, Aspera, the Digital Watermarking Alliance, Menlo Security, Microsoft Azure, NAGRA, NexGuard, Convergent Risks, HGST, PwC, Thinklogical, Avid, Militus Cybersecurity Solutions, Amazon Web Services and Bob Gold & Associates.
