HITS: Spring 2017: MarkLogic, Avanade Execs to Put Focus on Metadata, Smart Content

The CTO of MarkLogic and the technology innovation lead for Avanade will be among those tackling the role data is playing today in making content smarter, at HITS: Spring 2017, being held May 25 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Los Angeles.

Here’s a look at what they’ll have to share with attendees in a series of afternoon breakout sessions:

• The presentation “Getting to the Source and Preparing for the Future of Smart Content” has Anthony Accardo, director of R&D and metadata for Disney ABC Television Group, Jukka Paajanen, technology innovation lead for Avanade, and Matt Turner, CTO of MarkLogic, look at both the successes and challenges remaining to truly make content “smart,” by making use of data during every part of the creative process. Accardo will offer insight into the modular, descriptive metadata architecture Disney is using, which implements machine learning and automation to avoid lock-in with any particular tool or platform.

“We’ll look first at getting closer to the source of data with data in production,” Turner said. “Jukka Paajanen of Avanade is going to join me to talk about a project we collaborated on that pioneered managing data in production and making that data actionable to streamline operations as well improve data security. We’ll then look how to take advantage of the many new automation tools and techniques that can help you make the most of that data.”

• Ian Cameron, VP of digital media for Expert System, and Rachel DiSalle, senior manager of content governance for Rogers Media, will look at the use of semantic enrichment services as part of the content supply chain, in the afternoon breakout session “Elegant Workflows for Intelligent Content.” The use of this model across workflows, content platforms and data lakes can help unlock the full potential of content, they’ll argue.

“Using semantic enrichment services is a key first step to adding intelligence to your content for improved search and discoverability, but how do we integrate this into the content supply chain to make it available to end users?” Cameron said. “In this discussion, we’ll explore how Rogers Media has integrated Expert System’s semantic enrichment toolset into their DAM system allowing content creators to more easily find, repurpose and share content across the Media business.”

• In the presentation “Put Your Metadata Into Focus,” Avanade’s Paajanen will share ways to solve a pressing problem in content creation: the continued waste of metadata during the script-to-distribution process, resulting in wasted hours and data quality issues. Applying a more streamlined and efficient approach to metadata capture and management isn’t impossible to achieve today, with advanced technology allowing content companies to better facilitate manually entered metadata while also automating metadata creation (including object recognition from the video feed of the final cut or speech-to-text to extract context).

Produced by the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance (MESA), in partnership with the Hollywood IT Society (HITS), the Content Delivery & Security Association (CDSA), and the Smart Content Council, HITS: Spring is presented by Entertainment Partners, with sponsorship by Box, TiVo, Avanade, Amazon Web Services, Expert System, IBM, MarkLogic, MediaSilo, Microsft Azure, SAS, Zaszou IT Consulting and Ooyala.
