Head of Design – Weather Underground

Weather Underground, a unit of IBM Watson, is seeking a Design Director to lead design strategy and oversee our team of skilled product designers. The Director will help Weather Underground improve its existing mobile and desktop products and help WU’s evolution into the Internet of Things industry. The Director will report directly to the Senior Vice President of Product Management. The best candidates will have at least five to seven years of experience managing a team of designers and should be proficient working in an Agile environment. They should be trained in digital design, be proficient in user experience research, have a mastery of classic design principles, and have a deep understanding of web and mobile technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
Manage team of designers and work closely with product managers to define the vision for our products and lead the design team to deliver output that fulfills the vision.
Establish and advance Weather Underground’s aesthetics, style, and tone.
Review and critique the design team’s output to ensure superb interaction and data visualization.
Participate and lead UI/UX activities in an Agile environment including user research, interviews and testing. Translate findings into usable, effective and efficient user experiences.
Test and validate hypotheses in a rapid Agile cadence.
Contribute to the professional growth and development of design employees by inspiring them to research, envision and design top-tier consumer products.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

Bachelor’s Degree in User Experience Design, Graphic Design, or related discipline.
3+ years experience managing design teams in enterprise environments.
7+ years experience in user experience research and user interface design.
Excellent proficiency in Sketch, Adobe Creative Cloud/Suite, Invision, and other design tools.
Advanced understanding of design principles and their application.
Strong portfolio and work samples of user-centric design skills.
Deep understanding of web and mobile technologies
Ability to communicate clearly to inspire and lead direct reports and colleagues.

Preferred Technical and Professional Experience

Master’s Degree in related design discipline.
Strong data visualization skills and data analysis experience.
Passion for meteorological and atmospheric sciences.
5+ yrs of iOS & Android product design experience.
Strong preference will be given to candidates who have experience in the Internet of Things field.
