M+E Technology Job Board
Manager, Cloud Infrastructure Engineering
Box
As a Manager in our Cloud Infrastructure team, you and your team will lead the OS Lifecycle Management, including initial system hardening to provide the hardened base images and Configuration Management platform for Box services to consume.
These platforms are the heart of our technical stack and this manager will have the opportunity to lead through an interesting phase of the platforms where we need to ensure they meet our hybrid cloud strategy that emphasizes stability and developer productivity.
Why the team needs you
We’re a diverse mix of backgrounds and skillsets and each of us makes a big difference every day. We need someone who knows how to run enterprise-grade infrastructure and is passionate about using software to manage them rather than shell prompts. In particular we’re looking for a principled leader who can grow, build, and develop the team as our business (and our cloud platforms) grow over the coming months and years. You’ll work with your team and partner teams to develop and drive a roadmap and make our systems better and better for our customers!
Specifically, you will bring your expertise in designing and deploying production-grade, highly secure and performant Linux operating systems. You will lead a team responsible for Box’s Configuration Management (Puppet), Image Build Pipelines (Jenkins/Packer) along with base OS hardening of production systems. You will be passionate about addressing fundamental shifts at Box such as:
Implementing a Test Driven Development model and a CI/CD pipeline for OS and Configuration Management changes.
Abstracting the OS via containerizing shared services and applications on bare-metal (for those that aren’t Kubernetes friendly)
Rethinking the way we deploy and revert changes. The ability to remediate quickly allows us to be more agile.
Driving the company’s migration to a new OS and more meaningfully, driving improvements to reduce the friction associated with future OS upgrades.
Embracing and driving Box towards a Infrastructure-as-Code model.
Why you need Box
Box is growing fast. Real fast. Every business in the world is looking to modernize the way that they work. As the leader in cloud content management, Box is the only company that can help enterprises transform how people work together. The Cloud Infrastructure team is enabling this by scaling our IaaS and PaaS platforms faster than you can say “inflection point”. That’s where you come in!
Who you are
You have experience running distributed systems in production at scale and have managed systems with software
You’ve been a hands-on leader (3+ years) and a hands-on engineer (3+ years).
You value collaboration and think win-win
You’re detail-oriented and curious and when you’re faced with a black box – you open it up and figure out how it works
You effectively prioritize and manage your time and you can communicate effortlessly in any medium – email, slack, phone, face-to-face – and to any audience from a senior engineer to a vice president
You want to bring all these talents to work with other forward-thinking engineers and power a world-wide storage platform!
Here’s the fine print:
You have already spent 3+ years as an engineer supporting a production environment
You have expertise with Configuration Management, preferably Puppet
Proficient with Linux OS hardening (applying OS STIGs, CIS Benchmarks, SELinux)
Experience with common DevOps/SRE tools such as Configuration, Alerting, Observability
You’re totally at home command-lining around and troubleshooting/scripting on a Linux system
You are passionate about solving infrastructure problems with software
You have materially improved the operability of the systems you’ve run – through monitoring, service level management, lifecycle management, performance tuning, and documenting
