HITS Spring: Richey May Technology, Oracle Talk M&E’s Pandemic Return

Olivier Jorda, global senior director of Oracle’s media and entertainment strategy, remembers a survey that came out in December 2019, where 50 percent of media and entertainment executives agreed they could no longer rely on traditional distribution business models.

“They said their company would cease to exist without reinvention,” he said, speaking May 12 at the annual Hollywood Innovation and Transformation Summit (HITS) Spring event, during the presentation “Oracle + Richey May: The Year Hollywood Got Back to Work.”

“Well, this prediction, unfortunately, became a reality during COVID, for those who were not ready,” he said. The pandemic “was a huge moment of reckoning for everyone, and an opportunity to reflect, think outside the box, and to pivot to new distribution models. It’s clear to me things will never be the same again.”

He and JT Gaietto, executive director of cybersecurity advisory for Richey May Technology Solutions, used their time to discuss what companies are doing as Hollywood continues to “unthaw” and get back in to the business of developing content for the world, tackling the trends and considerations that companies should keep in mind as they work on opening their offices and productions back up.

Jorda he’s seen three signs of success for companies coming out of the pandemic: further investment in digital strategies, embrace of a remote workforce, and adoption of remote production techniques and technologies.

Still, there are associated unknown risks to opening back up, Gaietto said, not just around content protection and the technical systems media and entertainment companies use, but also “all the new data we’re gathering as we continue to monitor the workplace for not only safety, but also our overall organization.”

“The pandemic changed not only out overall relationship to the way we work, but it’s also shifted our relationships with the way we manage content, not only in how we create it, but also in how we protect it,” Gaietto said.
