Italian Public Broadcaster Looks to NAGRA for Watermarking

Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI), an Italian free-to-air (FTA) national public service provider and major content producer and broadcaster operating numerous terrestrial TV channels and radio stations, has signed up NAGRA and its NexGuard forensic watermarking and anti-piracy service to help with its security strategy.

RAI becomes the first free-to-air broadcaster worldwide to watermark its content to protect its streaming content, with an eye on keeping its advertising revenues from harm.

“Our watermarking-based anti-piracy solutions are essential for RAI to effectively monitor copyright infringements and secure the value of the content distributed over OTT/AVOD,” said Thierry Legrand, SVP of EMEA sales for NAGRA. “Like many other customers, RAI relies on NAGRA’s strong reputation in media content security and anti-piracy expertise to not only understand the current challenges the industry is facing, but more importantly provide the necessary tools and solutions needed to keep pirates at bay.”

With production budgets and consumer demand on the rise, content owners and distributors are keeping a close eye on illicit content sharing and re-streaming of original content. For RAI, NAGRA’s solution inserts NexGuard forensic watermarks into the broadcaster’s content available to consumers via the RAI OTT web and app service.

NAGRA’s Anti-Piracy Services platform is also being leveraged, providing a crawling engine to monitor the web and pirate IPTV services, constantly searching for illegal use of original content. The crawled content is inspected to detect watermarks and confirms when content is illegally redistributed.
