BB Media Sees Modest Streaming Launches in February

A new analysis by media and entertainment data firm BB Media tallied one new streaming service launch globally in February, along with a smattering of new service launches in Europe, North America, and Latin America.

The Multiscreens+ Platform Essentials report pointed to the global launch of Bloomberg Originals, a new streaming brand of original programming, under the banner “Business as You’ve Never Seen It,” as the sole global streamer to launch worldwide during the month. The initiative promises to explore all angles of climate change, technology, finance, sports and more through documentary-style deep dives, talk shows, live events, and video podcasts.

In Europe, both Sky Showtime and Megogo expanded to new territories, Albania, Czech Republic, Hungary, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Spain for the former, and Poland for the latter. Meanwhile, CaixaForum+ launched in Spain. The platform premieres with more than 300 titles and 1,000 pieces of audio and video.

For North America, Viaplay expanded to the U.S. and Canada, while Sling Freestream debuted in the U.S., delivering more than 210 channels and 41,000 VOD titles. The technology company Vidaa, developer of the operating system for smart TVs of the same name, also launched a free streaming service as an extra benefit for users of smart TVs with its operating system.

In Latin America, two new streamers debuted, including Claro TV+, a pay TV service that can be accessed via streaming through applications for mobile devices and smart TVs and through streaming players and specific decoders sold by the company; and EiTV Play, an open solution for online publishing and distribution of TV, radio, audio channels, movies, series, and documentaries via streaming.
