Whip Media: Prolonged Strikes Leads to Higher Streaming Churn

Every major SVOD player is likely to see higher churn if a strike significantly delays new US original programming, based on how viewers perceive the potential impact of the strike today, according to a new survey from Whip Media.

Hulu would see the worst potential subscriber losses the longer original programming is delayed due to the writers and actors strikes, with Prime Video, Max, and Disney+ close behind.

Netflix looks to be least vulnerable to the impact of the strike on delays in release of new US original programming, as the only service to see less than a 100 percent increase in subscribers likely to cancel due to significant delays.

Based on general satisfaction with the strikes out of the equation, Hulu is actually in the second-best shape of all streamers, with only 4.5 percent saying they’re thinking of cancelling, second only to Prime Video. Netflix falls in the middle with 9.4 percent, while Paramount+ is worst off with 11.9 percent.

The survey was fielded to Whip Media’s U.S. panel of TV and film consumers from July 7-17, 2023. Respondents were between the ages of 18 and 54.
