HTC Drops Vive VR Price (SSN)

In a bid to stay competitive with the likes of the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR, HTC Aug. 21 lowered the price of its Vive headset to $599, a $200 price cut.

With 420,000 devices shipped in 2016, PC-based system ranks third among major VR hardware offerings, behind the PlayStation VR (745,000) and Samsung Gear VR (4.33 million), according to data from research firm SuperData.

New owners of Vive also receive a free trial subscription to Viveport, HTC’s VR portal, offering five titles a month to experience. There are currently more than 200 titles available in the service.

“Vive is the leader globally in high-end VR, and this new entry price will make the system available to an even broader audience,” Matthew Gepp, senior manager of social media for HTC Vive, wrote in a blog post. “When customers purchase Vive, they are getting superior VR technology and the most complete ecosystem in VR.

“Vive has the best tracking technology and most compelling content. We work tirelessly to continue to iterate and improve on Vive to deliver on the promise of VR. And developers are taking full advantage of this tech in delivering the best software on the market and bringing it to Vive owners.”
