Patent Licensing Executive

Via Licensing is seeking a senior licensing executive based in London. This person will be responsible for supporting the company’s wireless standards-essential patents (SEPs) licensing program as well as audio and other programs under development.

Via Licensing, the leader in standards-based patent pool licensing, is accelerating the pace of its activities. As a member of the Via Licensing team, you will help develop programs to license and participate in the licensing of, patents covering standardized technologies Via members have helped develop. These member companies protect their innovations in part through patenting as they continue to revolutionize how people create, deliver, and enjoy communications and entertainment through connected devices. The successful candidate will be an experienced attorney or licensing executive with experience in strategic technical and licensing matters related to SEPs; prior experience in negotiating licenses in the context of patent “pools” on a global platform is a plus. He or she must have experience negotiating, especially closing, significant licenses to meet company objectives. Responsibilities include identifying, analyzing, and evaluating patent licensing opportunities, assisting the program team in developing new wireless licensing programs, negotiating agreement terms with patent holders and licensees, and concluding licensing agreements. The ideal candidate will have strong communication and presentation skills with demonstrated success in managing licensing matters.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:

Familiarity with standards-essential patent (SEP) licensing and standards bodies.
Relevant industry-related experience is highly desired.
Licensed to practice law or a technical undergrad degree coupled with an MBA.
The ability to support the development and execution of strategic licensing programs and assertion campaigns.
Technical and legal proficiency is framed in a business mentality, including assessing patent portfolios for all contexts, including acquisition, licensing, and litigation.
Excellent written and oral communication skills facilitate effective presentations, with the ability to interact effectively with clients and business leaders at all levels; must be able to identify critical issues requiring action and convey them in a useful manner to clients and prospective licensees alike.
Experience working in diverse cultural settings with due consideration for local traditions, behaviors, and business practices a must.
The person should amplify team engagement, employing adaptability and flexibility and efficient management of both internal and external resources.
Effective leadership with strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to function well in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Works collegially and pro-actively with various teams across the company to advise on legal and licensing issues, including initial technical assessment of potential assertion and/or patent asset acquisition opportunities.
A quick study, able to handle complex matters with multiple initiatives going on simultaneously.
Self-starter that is effective in driving change throughout the business and gaining stakeholder buy-in.
Must exercise sound judgment, be able to work independently and with teams efficiently under time/pressure constraints and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Must possess outstanding credentials with demonstrated success in closing deals.

Legal Proficiency – The ability to draft contractual language and answer legal questions is a plus, especially regarding FRAND and SEP licensing.
Adaptability/Flexibility – Able to work effectively within a variety of situations, proactively recognizes and addresses existing or emerging risks adapts to changes both internally and in the broader/external context.
Ability to influence decisions toward positive outcomes.
