HITS June 18 Burbank Think Tank to Tackle Digital Storage Solutions

By Lyndsey Schaefer

Studio archivists and senior IT executives are set to dig into the challenges of long-term digital storage at the upcoming HITS Think Tank in Burbank. Taking place Tuesday, June 18 at 4 p.m. PT at the Burbank Airport Marriott, “From Frame to Finish: What’s Your Digital Content Management Strategy?” will feature panelists Steven Anastasi, Vice President of Media Archives, Warner Bros., Ed Durst, Principal Solutions Consultant – Digital Media Group, Open Text, Stan Scoggins, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Digital Asset Management, Universal Pictures, and JR Yasgur, Vice President, Aggregated Metadata Management & Operations, Sony Pictures Entertainment.

From the first frame shot to the global distribution of finished product, every studio is adopting ways to tag, manage and ultimately, monetize their content throughout their new digital supply chain and their long-tail distribution channels. The transition to digital capture in the motion picture and television industry is a massive shift in how archives manage libraries. According to Anastasi, two main issues arise: The amount of data being created and the method to keep this data alive, with shoot ratios have more than double from the days of shooting on film.

“Our industry is used to the ‘store and ignore’ policy of climate controlled deep storage at low costs. This enabled our industry to keep ‘everything,’ Anastasi says. “We were able to ID the assets based on the metadata on the can or in the case of film, ID by key or scene number via the naked eye. The archives’ ability to ‘see’ what is on the deliverables is a challenge. All digital media requires migration every several years to keep the data alive.”
