Whip Media: Tis the Season for Holiday Films

More than 160 new Christmas movies are debuting this holiday season, and with more than half of Americans prioritising holiday content this year, there’ll be plenty of eyeballs watching them.

That’s according to a new report from Whip Media, which surveyed more than 3,200 US-based respondents on their seasonal film viewing habits.

The findings see Hallmark, Netflix, Lifetime, Disney+ and Hulu ranked by respondents as the top-of-mind providers for seasonal titles, with a strong majority (74 percent) reporting they watch both new and previously released made-for-TV holiday movies. Nearly a fifth (17 percent) of holiday TV movie viewers focus on new releases only.

Seventy-one percent of respondents indicated they regularly watch these titles alone, with 51 percent saying they will often watch with their families. A little more than a quarter (28 percent) watch with their partner. Meanwhile, more than half said they discovered new holiday movies through ads or trailers (52 percent) and/or recommendations from a streaming service or device (51 percent). Nearly half (47 percent) also indicated the importance of social media in finding out about new holiday releases.

“While the premise/storyline and talent are the key drivers influencing a decision to watch these titles, a significant portion of consumers (58 percent) indicated that simply having access to the network/platform is important,” the report read.
