Reelgood Data Shows Catalog Growth of Major U.S. Streaming Services

Although it’s no secret that the prices of subscription streaming services keep going up, for some U.S. consumers, the larger issue is which of those services are keeping up with those price hikes by upping their catalog games.

Newly released data from Reelgood shines a spotlight on the major catalog growth that has happened from Jan. 15, 2021, through Oct. 15, 2023, among the major U.S. streaming services.

Reelgood looked at the libraries of eight leading U.S. streaming services – Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, Max, Hulu, Netflix, Peacock (premium), Prime Video (Amazon) and Paramount Plus/Paramount Plus with Showtime – and tallied their depth of movie and TV titles, the data company said.

Amazon was the clear winner when it came to the number of movie catalog titles over the past two years, but its film catalog decreased from Jan. 15, 2021, when it had 14,670 titles, to just 10,285 on Oct. 17, 2022. The catalog, however, grew to 12,071 as of Oct. 15 this year, Reelgood’s data showed.

Netflix’s movie catalog grew from 3,766 in 2021 to 3,921 in 2022 and to 3,977 in 2023. Peacock’s grew from 759 in 2021 to 2,683 in 2022 and to 3,950 in 2023. Hulu’s grew from 916 in 2021 to 1,209 in 2022 to 2,419 in 2023.

But Max’s movie catalog grew from 1,932 in 2021 to 2,558 in 2023 before dipping to 2,168 in 2023. Disney’s grew from 742 in 2021 to 1,246 in 2022 to 1,400 in 2023. Paramount’s grew from 642 in 2021 to 2,302 in 2022 but slipped to 830 in 2023. And Apple TV Plus increased from just 17 in 2021 to 58 in 2022 and 69 in 2023.

Meanwhile, when it comes to the TV show catalog evolution, Hulu remained #1 in 2023, with 2,656 this year, up from 1,395 in 2022 and 1,700 in 2021.

Netflix followed closely behind, with 2,495 TV show catalog titles this year, up from 2,277 in 2022 and 2,495 in 2021. Similarly, Max grew to 1,365 in 2023 from 667 in 2022 and 606 in 2021, while Peacock grew to 1,171 in 2023 from 832 in 2022 and just 378 in 2021, Paramount grew to 752 in 2023 from 728 last year and 557 in 2021, Disney grew to 576 this year from 487 in 2022 and 311 in 2021, and Apple TV Plus increased to 139 this year from 97 in 2022 and 34 in 2021.
