BB Media: A Slow September for Streaming Launches

A mere four new streaming platforms were announced or launched worldwide during the month of September, marking a slowdown in new services, according to a report from media and entertainment data science firm BB Media.

In the UK, BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 announced they were teaming up to launch a new free TV service called Freely, set to launch in 2024.

In Latin America, Warner Bros Discovery said it was delaying the launch of Max to the first quarter of 2024, while in Argentina, the government debuted Bafilma, its own free streaming platform offering more than 500 movie titles, series, documentaries and shorts produced in Buenos Aires.

In Asia, the Paramount+ streaming service will launch in Japan in December as a no extra-charge addition to cable and internet provider J:COM’s platform and to pay TV service Wowow.

Worldwide, there were two new service announcements: Primeran, a new Basque platform that’s project of Basque Country Television (EITB), developed by Mediapro Group that offers more than 3,000 episodes of content, and Televen Stream, the streaming service of the Venezuelan TV station Televen.

Meanwhile, the global anime streamer Wakanim shuttered after 15 years of operations, and Warner Bros. Discovery rebranded Boomerang to Cartoonito across the Nordics, Turkey, Middle East and North Africa.
